The Importance of Subfloor Preparation

Subfloor preparation is one of the most overlooked and underestimated part of a flooring project. Unbeknownst to most homeowners, subfloor preparation is what will be the difference between a decent installation and an excellent one. There have been projects where more time was spent on subfloor preparation than the actual installation, and it comes as no surprise to us.

Leveling and Eliminating Squeaks

The main aspect of floor preparation is planing uneven plywood seams. Due to settling and aging of a house, the plywood seams tend to raise upward above the rest of the subfloor. Sometimes this is not easily noticeable, which is why we thoroughly check all seams and plane the ones that have risen. Although a dusty and noisy task, it is vital to make all plywood seams flush with the subfloor to ensure the new flooring lays perfectly flat. Additionally, we check the subfloor for any squeaks and creaks and secure plywood to joists to reduce or eliminate any noise. Lastly, we level out low spots that need attention using a self-leveling compound. Contact us today for more information!
